Welcome to my ITU page.
As a student at CSUSM, one of the requirements for this semester is to complete an Integrated Thematic Unit. Working with three other Teacher Candidates I have helped constructe an ITU focusing on the Luiseno Indians. Within this unit we examine the culture, history and biology of these proud people through language arts, social studies and biology. The goal of my unit is to get students to empathize with these amazing people and to be able to carry this empathy by extension to other minority groups. To do this they will study and reflect on a variety of historical events such as the Trail of Tears, the Mission System, and the Temecula Massacre in which they will conduct a mock trial.

Please watch this short video on the history of the Luiseno Indians. It is very short but gives a great introduction to the wrongs these great people have endured at the hands of others. As you watch the video, think about the fact that this occurred almost 25 years after the United States declared its independence and only got worse after California became a state. How did a thing like this happen in the "land of the free"? Can we draw connections to situations in today's society? You tell me...
